Levon Ter-Petrosian Will Speak about 4 Accusations

Aramazd is surely taking Internet and Facebook seriously. Just like at the October 26th rally, this time I received an invitation to attend the November 16th opposition rally via my Facebook friend Aramazd Ghalamkaryan. No need to say, that I will definitely attend the event, especially as the title of the rally is very intriguing this time: “Levon Ter-Petrosian Will Speak about 4 Accusations“. I don’t know about the others, but I appreciate Aramazd’s efforts for using the Internet as a medium to communicate opposition related information to the public – although the Internet user-base in Armenia remains rather small. Below is the event info as it appeared on Facebook:

PS: According to Aramazd the authorities are so afraid of the rally, that they are tearing the posters with the announcement about the rally on the streets of Yerevan. I can’t say I’ve seen any state official touching the posters, and there are enough LTP haters in this country to tear the posters without anybody ordering them to do it, but I’m ready to confirm, that the authorities are quite nervous recently.

By the way – disseminating information about the rally seems to have become risky business, here’s an article from A1plus about detention of LTP supporters for distributing rally announcement leaflets.

THEY DETAIN AGAIN | [12:53 pm] 13 November, 2007

Narek Galstyan, chairman of “Sargis Tkhruni” Youth Student Union of “Hnchak Social Democratic Party” and Eduard Makaryan, member of the party were detained yesterday at 23.30 p.m. for distributing leaflets.

As Narek Galstyan informed “A1+”, they were detained in the territory of National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre for disseminating information on 16 October gathering, while the police detained them for suspecting in an alleged robbery. They were kept in the police station until 3.00 a.m.

Narek Galstyan ensures that they will continue the fight to reinforce democracy in the country.

“We all are determined to fight and should work for the upcoming gathering”, said the chairman of “Sargis Tkhruni” Youth Student Union.

Այսօր առավոտյան ծեծի է ենթարկվել Սոցիալ-դեմոկրատական հնչակյան կուսակցության «Սարգիս Տխրունի» ուսանողական միության նախագահ, «Ազատություն» ռադիոկայանի նախկին թղթակից Նարեկ Գալստյանը:

Ժամը 11:00-ի սահմաններում, երբ նա տնից` Նոր Նորքի 9-րդ զանգվածից տաքսի ավտոմեքենայով իջնում էր Նորքի ճանապարհով, մեքենան կանգնեցրել են մթնեցված ապակիներով «ՎԱԶ-2106» ավտոմեքենայի երեք ուղեւորները, բանալին խլել են վարորդից, մեքենայից իջեցրել են Գալստյանին եւ ծեծել` հարվածներ հասցնելով հիմնականում գլխին:

Ինչպես «Ազատություն» ռադիոկայանին փոխանցեց «Այլընտրանք» նախաձեռնության ղեկավար անդամ Նիկոլ Փաշինյանը, ով հիվանդանոցում էր, հարձակվողները սպառնացել են, որ եթե Գալստյանը մեկ անգամ էլ մամուլին տեղեկատվություն փոխանցի, նրան կսպանեն:

Ներկայումս Նարեկ Գալստյանը գտնվում է Սուրբ Գրիգոր Լուսավորիչ բժշկական կենտրոնի վերակենդանացման բաժանմունքում:

Երկու օր առաջ Գալստյանին եւ «Սարգիս Տխրունի» միության եւս մեկ անդամի ձերբակալել եւ տարել էին ոստիկանության Կենտրոնի բաժին` ընդդիմադիր բովանդակությամբ թռուցիկներ փակցնելու համար: Շուրջ երեք ժամ ոստիկանությունում պահելուց հետո նրան ազատ էին արձակել, ինչպես ինքն էր պատմել «Ազատություն» ռադիոկայանին` խորհուրդ տալով այլեւս նման թռուցիկներ չտարածել:

Mazd – thank you for the information. For readers who don’t know Armenian, the comment above is a report from Radio Liberty, telling about the beeting of opposition activist Narek Galstyan this morning, following his arrest two days ago, which brings serious doubts, that it is connected with the authorities and the rally scheduled for tomorrow.
