There were so many posts about the Resolution 106 passed by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, that I find it impossible to translate it, and have just provided links to some of them with extracts of the most intersting or relevant sections from their posts. If and when I have time this mess may turn into a more coherent post. Before then – go, read, comment!

JLiving Notes – Интересно, все же, работает в США законодательная власть. Но, аргументы все больше “Турция нужна нам как союзник в борьбе с терроризмом”, “можем ли мы ставить под угрозу безопасность наших солдат в Турции и Ираке”. Что бы делала администрация Буша и республиканцы не будь терроризма? Наверное придумали бы его. А может это они и придумали?
Хорошие аргументы сторонников. Один ссылается на то, что признание геноцида армян Россией никак не повлияло на отношения между странами, чему подтверждение рост товарооборота, а ЕС практически ставит перед потенциальным, хоть и в далекой перспективе, членом Евросоюза задачу о признании геноцида. Подкованный мужик, конгрессмен этот из Калифорнии 🙂
Blogian – House Resolution 106, formally recognizing the Armenian Genocide as such, passed a minute ago in the House Committee on Foreign Affairs in the U.S. Congress. [] The Chairman, who voted yes on the resolution, also said the next markup would be a resolution introduced by him reaffirming Turkey’s and America’s friendship.

Unzipped – According to Jewish sources, seven of eight Jewish members on a U.S. Congressional Committee voted for a resolution to recognize the Armenian genocide. The only Jewish member to vote against was Robert Wexler, who cited among other reasons Turkey’s close relationship with Israel. Others cited Holocaust remembrance as a reason for their votes. Jewish congressmen who supported the resolution included the Committee chairman Tom Lantos, the only Holocaust survivor in Congress.

In an interview with BBC news channel, Hratche Koundarjian of the Aegis Trust, a Genocide prevention organisation based in the UK, said that after the final Congressional approval, Britain will remain the last major Western power to yet acknowledge Armenian Genocide as such. He expressed hope that British parliament will follow suit.

I urge members to oppose the Armenian genocide resolution now being considered by the House Foreign Affairs Committee. We all deeply regret the tragic suffering of the Armenian people that began in 1915. This resolution is not the right response to these historic mass killings, and its passage would do great harm to our relations with a key ally in NATO and in the global war on terror.

Mark Grigoryan – Я рад, конечно, что американские законодатели пошли на этот шаг. С точки зрения нравственности, конечно, очень важно, что они это сделали. Но что может означать это шаг для турецко-армянских проблем? Боюсь, мало чего, потому что если смотреть с точки зрения политики, то этот шаг относится к сфере американо-турецких отношений и с Арменией мало связан. Ведь заслуга в одобрении резолюции, главным образом, принадлежит армянскому лобби США, и в меньшей степени правительству Армении. Это, конечно, очень важный шаг и очень важное решение. Меня этот шаг радует.
Oneworld Multimedia – Despite warnings from Turkey and the White House, the BBC reports that House Resolution 106 which would recognize the massacre and deportation of Armenians living in Ottoman Turkey as Genocide has been passed by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Life in the Armenian Diaspora – I’ll never forget this day! How monumental is this? Sitting in California unable to watch the House Foreign Affairs Committee meeting I had my father calling me from Armenia to provide periodic updates since he was able to watch the session live. I can’t even begin to express how I’m feeling right now, I’m happy, proud, relieved, ecstatic, encouraged, hopeful…. [] It’s going to be VERY interesting to see how this all plays out. Will Turkey close the border? Will Turkey take advantage of this situation and attempt to cleanse Norther Iraq of Kurds? Will the Resolution pass when it goes to a full house vote? Armenia Blog – Earlier Bush had this to say, but it seems his even his superior persuasive skills could not prevent the bill from moving forward!
Life in Armenia – What was very interesting for me this morning, was reading all the news articles, and there was definitely no shortage of them. I opened Google News to search for “Armenian Genocide” to see if it passed, but instead was greeted with “Armenian Genocide Resolution Passes Committee” as the top headline, with 650 stories already on the topic. That’s big news! The coverage and points being raised were quite varied, from the sickening editorial in the Washington Post to widespread calls for doing the right thing. Lantos, head of the committee, summarized the vote beforehand as choosing between acknowledging a genocide, and appeasing Turkey for military reasons. Basically, do the right thing, or give in to the questionable arm-twisting of a supposed ally – though he did not put it in those undiplomatic terms.
Turkey’s huge blackmail threat – not allowing transport through Turkey to Iraq simply doesn’t impress me. Most of it seems already to go through the Persian Gulf… why can’t all of it?
So, we are closer than ever to the big day… I have a hard time believing it can be so close, but… it really might happen. Then the only one left to come around is the big Turk himself!

Life in Armenia – Finally, in front of the TV, I witnessed the song and dance the American Government Leaders were doing regarding the Genocide Resolution. I was shocked that Rice, Gates and even the big guy, Bush were TWISTING the reality of the issue (not once did they mention that this is not a historic fact or that the issue is not based on Justice – it was clear that the main song revolved around political gain) held Press Conferences, one by one to officially give in to Turkish threats and dance under their tunes. Did the American public (audience in this case) not notice how weak the USA is portraying itself in front of the world and dancing on its toes? I mean who really has the upper hand here? The Turkish government should be reminded of the amount of US dollars spent on Turkey in the name of “development” or “Trade”. If anyone should be sending out warnings, it should be the USA on Turkey’s childish behavior.
So, stop Twisting and let the Swing begin!

East Meets West – Simply put – it is about time. 92 years later, why is the world still debating this? We do not consider the Holocaust as an alleged incident; then why bend to political pressure in Ankara to refuse to recognize the brutal murder and deportation of 1.5 million Armenians as nothing short of genocide?
Worse yet is Turkey’s reaction, which is absolutely appalling (though not surprising)– read threats to the US, including cutting support for the war in Iraq, the danger of our men on their bases and cutting off access to airfields and roads if the resolution passes the Senate (See NY Times and L.A. Times articles). And of course Bush puts morality aside (ironic for one who preaches morals left and right and promises he made back in 2000 when he was first elected), and bends over backwards to appease Turkey and is now “deeply disappointed” in the House Committee; even worse, he claims that “we support a full and fair accounting of the atrocities that befell as many as 1.5m Armenians during World War I, which House Resolution 106 does not do.” Historians and the world do not argue over what befell the Armenians; the only people that really have any contentions are Turkish officials and people that rely on their support (surprise, surprise).
Life in Armenia – I’m quite confident that they put 106 to a vote as a result of my presence in Washington. Some say they heard murmurs that I was coming and said they better act before I unleash my wrath on Congress. Okay, I’m seriously kidding, but I’m kicking myself for not staying just another week to be in Washington for this historic event. I just arrived back in Yerevan as the Committee began to debate. They spoke for hoooouuuuuuurrrrrssss before I could even get any info. I only had CNN to rely on with their disgustingly slanted coverage of the story. It seemed they cared more about Turkey’s reaction than the vote itself. They even went as far as to paint a victimized picture of the Turks after the PKK killed a few of their soldiers, showing weeping mothers of the soldiers for the loss of their children. My God!
Anyway, yes it’s ALL over the news, and so far the only headline I see that sheds a slightly positive light on the situation is the LA Times. Where most are focusing on Bush’s and Turkey’s anger at the measure, they managed to portray the Turks, Bush and friends as the massive lobbying effort through which the resolution survived.

Это было, несмотря на контекст, очень поучительное зрелище. Те, кто высказывались против, а это 21 из 48, откровенно говорили примерно следующее: Да, геноцид был, я хорошо это понимаю и знаю, были ужасные зверства, которые были организованы и осуществлены на государственном уровне. Но сейчас нам это не выгодно. Не тот момент. Один из конгрессменов не выдержал, и выдал фразу – как вам не стыдно. Uzogh – Как – то мне пришлось гоняться за крысой. Я гонял ее долго. Перекрывал отступление. Отгонял ее от проходо, через которые она могла убежать швыряя всякие вещи. Наконец я загнал ее в угол. Она на меня посмотрела, запищала и бросилась атаковать. Я ударил ее ботинком (ботинок был тяжелый – армейский), и, по всей видимости, перешиб хребет. Крыса перестала двигаться, но стала кричать. Հայաստանի արտաքին քաղաքականության պրագմատիզմը կայանում է ոչ թե Թուրքիայի ակնհայտ թշնամությունն անտեսելու, այլ Հայկական հարցը համակողմանիորեն վերարծարծելու մեջ, ներառյալ ու հատկապես տարածքային փոխհատուցման վերաբերյալ իր առաջարկելիք քաղաքականապես իրապաշտ լուծումներում։

Notes from Hairenik – Personally I think that although once again Turkey is bullying the US to stop this act using their upper hand, even if the resolution is passed not much would change in terms of relations between the two nations. Turkey has opposed similar resolutions repeatedly (although I think a similar resolution was passed by Congress in the 1970s if memory serves), and they get away with it each time since the US relies on its military presence there. But if the resolution does pass this time around—the odds of that happening decreasing with each passing day—Turkey can’t do much. One significant reason being the fact that Turkey’s economy has had its fair share of ups and downs in recent history, and it wasn’t so long ago when the Turkish lira lost its value against the dollar (at one time 1,000,000 lira equaled $1.00). Each time Turkey’s economy tanked the US was there to save it from drowning. Although the Turkish economy is apparently booming at a fast rate no one can say how long it will continue before the US comes to the rescue once again. The Turkish leadership knows this but must do all it can to suppress such resolutions from being passed by governments around the world anyway. For instance, it threatened to sever economic ties with France, but even though the resolution was passed there overwhelmingly, trade suffered only temporarily before things went back more or less to normal. After all, business comes before politics.
