Founder of “Heritage” party Raffi Hovhannisian will quit the Parliament. So will major businessman, opposition MP Khachatur Suqiasian. Both news came today in the matter of one hour. Who’s next? From the top of my head I could name at least 3 more:
1. Hakob Hakobian
2. Myasnik Malkhasian
3. Sasun Mikayelian
In his announcement about stepping down Khachatur Suqiasian said: “Whatever happened to my parliamentarian colleagues and myself because of the unprincipled stance and ununderstandable vote in the National Assembly, gives me grounds to state, that I have nothing to do in this Parliament.”
Following the post-election violence in Yerevan last March, the National Assembly voted for stripping Khachatur Suqiasian, Hakob Hakobian, Myasnik Malkhasian and Sasun Mikayelian of their parliamentarian immunity. Hakob Hakobian, Myasnik Malkhasian and Sasun Mikayelian were convicted. Hakob Hakobian and Myasnik Malkhasian were released under the Amnesty decree adopted by Parliament in June. Sasun Mikayelian is still in prison, as the Amnesty didn’t apply to him. Having returned after July 31st, when the term defined by the Amnesty was over, Khachatur Suqiasian is facing trial.
Raffi Hovhannisian has yet to formally announce his decision and give and explanation.
While the reasons are different, the trend is striking. Meanwhile, I’m trying to find out here – why did Khachatur Suqiasian return at all? It doesn’t seem like he had any reason for that, or did he?
