The unusual one-sentence press release on President Serzh Sarkissian’s website alongside a photo seems to have been posted to stir gossip and speculation.
“President Serzh Sarkissian had a working meeting with Syunik governor Surik Khachatrian,” the press release runs, offering no additional details, which is highly unusual. Serzh Sarkissian looks rather grim on the photo, adding an additional dimension.
Rumours that Khachatrian, who has been in office since 2004, is about to be sacked, which have been iterated on numerous occasions over and over again in the past, is yet another reason.
Surik Khachatrian is better known with his “Litska” nickname and is branded a crime figure by opposition politicians and media. Khachatrian has in the past come to media attention for his attacks against the local media, ruling the region as if it was his backyard, corruption allegations and more.
All these speculations are built out of thin air of course and you could accuse me of spreading rumors. My answer? I’m not the one who started it all, the unusual press-release did!
