Armenia is celebrating today the 21st anniversary of its new independent statehood.
Armenia declared its sovereignty from the Soviet Union on August 23, 1990. In the wake of the August Coup, a referendum was held on the question of secession. Following an overwhelming vote in favour, full independence was declared on September 21, 1991.
This great archive video shows the discussions in the Armenian parliament, that preceded the referendum. Really interesting.
PS: Armenia had to survive many hardships over the past 21 years of independence: war, blockade, economic and energy crisis. But I’ve never had any doubts about the correctness of the decision to regain independence. Throughout the years I’ve been happy to wake up on September 21st with an air of excitement and wish everyone a Happy Independence Day! Happy Independence, Armenians!
