The Armenian Massacre Still Haunts Its Last Survivors 100 Years Later. National Geographic

I stumbled upon this 3-minute video by the “National Geographic” today and decided to share it just in case you haven’t seen it either. Here’s a block-quote from the video’s description:

Starting in 1915, 500,000 to 1.5 million ethnic Armenians living in Turkey were killed or expelled from their ancestral lands, where they’d lived mainly peaceably with the Turks for centuries. Armenians call the slaughter genocide; Turks say it was the consequence of the larger war, in which many groups, including Turks, suffered terribly. Five of the few remaining Armenian survivors reflect on the horrors they faced fleeing their homeland as children and on what life has been like for them in exile.

Syrian-Armenian Refugees Send this Videomessage on Genocide Remembrance Day

My very good friends, a group of young Syrian-Armenians, who have found refuge in Armenia from Syria’s raging civil war, have made this remarkable video message today, which I want to share with you.

A message to those who tried to scratch our chapter from the book of human existence.
We, the descendants of the Armenian Genocide survivors, are and will be the protectors of our identity and cultural heritage.
With a spark in our eyes, we stand up.
We speak up and hold our heads up!
Today, we carry the torch of our nation and prove to the world that we are unbreakable.

Protesters Throw Eggs at Russian Embassy in Yerevan

Russia has been shuffling Armenia and Azerbaijan as a pack of old cards for its interests. It took hundreds of lost lives until at least some people in Armenia started to understand this. Today this understanding took concrete shape and form as hundreds of people rallied in Yerevan against Russian sale of arms to Azerbaijan as well as Russia’s treacherous stance towards Armenia. Sex Diaries Recall Mussolini's understanding of the Armenian Genocide

Mussolini’s mistress, Clara Petacci, recorded intimate details of her affair with Il Duce in her journal. Her newly published diary reveals Mussolini as a sex-addicted anti-Semite who found Hitler “very likeable” — and who occasionally suffered from impotence.
Petacci’s recollections are of special interest to Armenians, because of this quote below:

Mussolini, while flipping through French newspapers, suddenly got into a bad mood. “These disgusting Jews, they should all be destroyed,” he said. “I will create a bloodbath the way the Turks once did. I will isolate them and imprison them. They will come to know the steel fist of Mussolini. It is time that the Italians realize that can no longer exploited by these snakes.”

Those diaries were published for the first time last week, to the considerable consternation of one of Mussolini’s descendents. “This woman would be convicted of stalking today,” says Alessandra Mussolini, Il Duce’s granddaughter. She insists that “not a word” of what Petacci wrote about her grandfather is true. Meanwhile, some extracts from the diaries, containing also the quote above, are avaliable here. Obama marks Armenia’s independence day with a slight tilt

U.S. President Barack Obama marked the 18th anniversary of Armenia’s declaration of independence late Tuesday with a special statement and a congratulatory message to his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sarkisian, RFE/RL reports.

“The people of the United States join the people of Armenia in celebrating Armenia’s day of independence today,” Obama said in a statement posted on the White House website. “We deeply value the many cultural and historic ties that bind our two countries.”

The full text of Obama’s statement is here.  The reason this statement by Obama  grabbed my attention is the background information on the RFE/RL story: “Obama similarly congratulated Armenians on the occasion and hailed their “spirit of independence, self-reliance, and survival” one year ago, when he was still a presidential candidate. “Even in the face of genocide, the pain of the past has not defeated the Armenians, either in Armenia or the far-flung diaspora,” he said in a September 2008 letter to Sarkisian.“ Link
